A bill that gives casino companies in Mississippi tax incentives to build
non-casino attractions has passed the state Legislature. Passed in the state
House and Senate, the bill that will facilitate the building of tourist
attractions such as golf courses, amusement parks, hotels and convention
facilities now awaits the approval from Gov. Haley Barbour.
As reported in the SunHerald of Mississippi,
the tax incentive can’t be used to build
casinos but gives a 30 percent sales tax rebate for tourism projects, including
upscale retail and hotel projects.
Casino companies were previously the
only businesses excluded from the program. Once the bill is signed, they will
be eligible for the tax incentive for investment of at least $10 million for
indoor or outdoor entertainment centers, museums, golf courses, spas,
professional sports facilities, marinas, motor speedways and other qualifying
attractions. The minimum investment for a hotel project is $40 million.
